Family Halloween

Turning spooky Halloween into a family Halloween experience is tricky for a lot of people. Many families of faith choose to not celebrate the day at all, while others don’t mind it as long as there are no ghosts or witches involved. Others enjoy it and go all out with decorations and spooky treats.

This article explains how our family chooses to make it a family friendly Halloween. We are Christians. We know the history of Halloween, we also know about Reformation Day, which was a great day for Martin Luther. As I explain our approach, I understand there will be disagreements. Please remember, we have thought long and hard about our decision, and feel total peace about it. I understand if you feel differently, and that’s ok.

We choose to view Halloween as an opportunity. It is the one night out of the year where your neighbors come to YOU! Yes, your house. Now they really want candy, which we do give them, but we also give them one of these stickers, shown below, and tell them that Jesus loves them!

My kids LOVE participating in this! We have these outdoor signs that we put in the grass, with Dollar Tree flashlights shining on them. Often times the neighbors will comment on how they like our signs. It’s really a highlight of our year.

We have chosen as a family to take the opportunity to serve our neighbors, and tell them about Jesus. It’s short and sweet, but it’s something that can impact them forever!

As the kids come to our home to Trick-or-Treat, we hand them a piece of candy with a Jesus sticker. It’s something my kids really love participating in. It’s a small way for us to make an impact on somebodies life.

If you are an allergy-friendly home, or like to offer other treats besides candy, these pencils are a perfect alternative. They are adorable and offer encouragement every time you use them.

When it comes to our kids, we often will make a day out of it. I love reading My Happy Pumpkin to them. It talks about how we are to let our lights shine for Jesus, and that night we get the opportunity to practice that.

We center our day around pumpkins and pumpkin crafts. We do not bring witches or ghosts of any sort into the home. It’s not something we value as important, so we choose to exclude them from our day.

The kids enjoy making Jack-O-Lantern pizza bagels for dinner, we make pumpkin crafts (that also work as Thanksgiving crafts), and we eat candy as we talk about our adventures. Typically we don’t carve pumpkins, I think the smell is nauseating… but we decorate pumpkins with stickers!

Right now we are living in 2020. Halloween may look different this year, but we are choosing to make it fun. If Trick-or-Treating is not allowed, we are planning these activities:

  • Play flashlight tag in the backyard
  • Movie night: Spookley The Square Pumpkin
  • Musical chairs
  • Candy Halloween Hunt (instead of Easter Egg Hunt)

DIY Pumpkin Paper Lanterns

These pumpkin paper lanterns are so easy to create.

  1. Fold a piece of orange paper in half, either hot dog or hamburger style 🙂
  2. Draw lines of any thickness along from the folded edge to the open side. Leave about a 1 inch border.
  3. Cut along the lines.
  4. Open the paper, then form a circle and staple the joined edges together top and bottom.
  5. Cut a piece of green paper and staple it at the top to create a loop or handle.
  6. At this point, you can be done or you can cut out leaves for the top, eyes, nose, and mouth. It’s completely up to you how you want to customize it.
